Recent graduate from a cybersecurity bootcamp and also just finished reading on the significance of worker’s cooperatives in Slow Down. After 14 years of corporate, capitalist work; it’s time for me to put my energy into more sustainable governance practices.
Unfortunately I live in Canada where there is not a single employee-owned cybersecurity company and only a few tech co-ops in Canada as per the tech coops list, which btw helped me find this community.
To the point then, this is an official RFC on the incorporation of a cybersecurity workers cooperative in Canada:
I just started the incorporation process last week, so far it’s just me and a few other graduates reviewing this. All the more reason why we’re in need of other perspectives.
Very interesting! I was just reading up on co-ops in Canada today. More specifically Quebec. As a referral, in EU, I’m part of a workers coop called “smart”. It exist in several countries now. It makes it possible for freelancers (any sector, although it started out as a system for artists) to invoice, without having to be an entrepreneur. You share the Tax number, every time you invoice, you are an employee of the coop, meaning you benefit from a legal team, advise, co-working space, and your taxes, health insurance are paid as a regular employee anywhere else.
Oh dear, Im new here. I wanted to edit my post but decided to click on the three dots instead to see what it was, wanted to close it and clicked on the bin.
If we decide to go the route of allowing working members to be individual consultants at their own rate - a tool to simplify invoicing would save us a lot of overhead and time - allowing us to focus on actually providing decent services. Thank you for sharing this Lucca. Hope we have a chance to work together soon.
