One method that would be worth looking at would the way that [Matrix.org](http://Matrix.org) funded their development costs, including salaries foir their programmers, [FAQ | Matrix.org](https://matrix.org/docs/guides/faq.html#who-is-funding-matrixorg)

This would be a viable method for creating all kinds of infrastructures. 😃
